Appreciation through Understanding

I welcome reviews of SCP. Reviews from experts are the most helpful to me, but I also learn from readers with different backgrounds and expectations. However, this week an Amazon.com reader listed the book as Good but lacking and proceeded to say that there is nothing in the book covering aperture or depth of field. This is so amazing to me that I must comment. This individual cannot have read the book. I am used to hearing that my explanations of important concepts are too detailed or technical, but never that they are altogether missing.
What about aperture? The definition of aperture is used throughout the book starting with the definition of F-numbers (p. 11), diffraction broadening (p.11), Stops and effective aperture (p.45), in connection with depth of field (p.56), and on and on.
Also, Depth of Field (DoF) is an important theme. It is one of the properties treated in detail in Chapter 11 in defining equivalent images not just for DSLR but up to 6x7. A rather deep introductory discussion of DoF begins on page 56 with its connection to circle of confusion (CoC) and viewing distances. The standard DoF equation is used on page 58 and special considerations for macrophotography are discussed on page 73.
This is enough stating the obvious.charles in General 12:09PM Jul 23, 2011 Comments [2]

Thank you for this clarification. I was a bit concerned about that authors claims as aperature and dof were also some of my principle interests in the book. Looking through the table of contents, I couldn't tell whether or not his claims were accurate and none of the other reviews seemed to address those criticisms so until now, I've been a bit hesitant to purchase the book. I suspect that others have been similiarly hesistant as well as that review is listed as, "The Most Helpful Critical Review." As such, I would strongly encourage you to comment on the review so that other potential buyers aren't dissuaded by that critic's false claims. In the mean time, I look forward to reading the book.
All the best,
Ruben
