Chapters 4, 5, and 6

I appreciate the feedback I have been getting primarily by email and posts on other forums.  Any kind of comment can help.  I, of course, need to fix typos, misspelled words, etc.  But I especially need comments about substance.  Is an essay trivial, or non-understandable, or boring?  And, what can be done to correct or to improve the chapters?  Are additional photographs or diagrams needed to illustrate points, and what other topics should be addressed?

I have decided to post the chapters as pdf files because most people are equipped to read pdf.  The originals are Word files; and the equations, Greek letters, and special symbols are provided by MathType.  Unfortunately, most photographers do not have MathType on their computers and cannot display the special fonts.

I am now posting drafts of Chapters 4, 5, and 6.  These are essentially essays of different sizes and difficulties.  The chapters may need to be combined or rearranged.

This set of chapters, especially Chapter 6, reveals more about the slant of the book.

4.  Images: What is Perspective?

5.  Why does a camera need a lens?

6.  Elementary Optics: How do lenses work?

I hope you enjoy them.

Comments:

Love the clarity of your exposition, and the illustrations. It must be hell to write on this subject since every word will be nit-picked to death by other "experts". Please ignore them and continue what to me is the effort of a born teacher. Looking forward to subsequent chapters, Richard Sobeck Hope I don't fail the math test

About substance: Assuming you will get to the subject of complex lenses I would like to know how the addition of lens elements improves the photograph. Having seen excellent results from simple box cameras as well as from more complex cameras, can a simple two element lens take just as good a photo if used at its optimal opening as the more complex lens? Does the multi element lens simply add speed?

Richard, thanks for your encouraging comments. There is indeed a chapter on the need for multiple lens elements. If you can stand small apertures (large F-stops), a few elements can work quite well. However, most people want low F-stops, no distortion, no color fringing, etc. They get heavy lenses and pay a lot.
